Excel Monthly Reports with Matze illustrated course cover

Build a report you can explain and refresh.

Excel users familiar with tables, cell references and PivotTables who want to build repeatable monthly reports.

Start with fictional order lines, combine monthly CSV files and connect a product master. Build your own Power Query steps, reconcile the results and test a new month.

What you receive

8 written lessons with exercises and worked answers, coursebook (11 pages), workbook (11 pages) with 55 fillable fields, offline lessons, a local workshop with JSON export/import, 10 practice files and a final project.

A complete practice dataset

Two starting months, a separate November file, product data and four deliberate error cases.

Independent control totals

Compare your output with a formula-based reference workbook containing 72 worked lines and monthly totals.

A repeatable acceptance check

Practise locale handling, left joins, line rounding, weighted ratios and a documented refresh procedure.

Written self-study. No videos, coaching, software licence, certification or pre-installed Power Query connection. You build the queries and PivotTable yourself. Fictional examples do not guarantee business results.

Try an exercise

A CSV price of 12.50 appears as 1250 after import. Should you divide every price by 100?

Compare the worked answer

No. Correct the import locale and check the unchanged source. A blanket division could corrupt values that imported correctly. Check another price, a discount and a date before continuing.

Your learning path

  1. 1. Define the report and its boundaries
    Understand what one row represents.
  2. 2. Import CSV values deliberately
Protect text identifiers and decimal values.
  3. 3. Combine compatible monthly files
    Create a repeatable folder import.
  4. 4. Keep exceptions visible
    Investigate conflicts before removing rows.
  5. 5. Match the product master safely
Prevent missing costs and multiplied rows.
  6. 6. Calculate measures and independent controls
Check line values and monthly totals.
  7. 7. Present a monthly report with context
    Separate observation from explanation.
  8. 8. Refresh and hand over the process
Prove that the next month works.

Suggested pace: 25–45 minutes per lesson plus your project. Try each exercise before reading the solution.

Before you buy

Microsoft Excel Desktop for Windows with Power Query; Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021/2024 recommended. Your own licence is required. Mac and web features may differ. You build the Power Query connections yourself from the instructions; the supplied worked-results workbook has no preinstalled connection. The fictional data retain EUR values and decimal commas for a deliberate locale exercise.

Is the report already connected?

No. The XLSX is a worked calculation reference. Building your own Power Query connection and PivotTable is part of the course.

Why do the CSV files use decimal commas?

The exercise intentionally teaches locale handling. English headers and instructions accompany the supplied EUR sample data; use German (Germany) when converting its comma-decimal columns.

Does contribution mean profit?

No. The example subtracts supplied item costs from revenue. Other business costs are outside this fictional model.

How do I use the download?

Extract the complete ZIP and read START.txt. Open index.html or Coursebook.pdf. Use a PDF reader with form support for Workbook.pdf. Open Workshop.html and export notes before closing; no autosave or cloud account is provided. Follow the practice-file instructions and check the supplied controls in your software.
