Better Everyday Phone Photos

One subject. Two light positions. A visible comparison.

Practise light, viewpoint, focus and selection with 20 phone-photo assignments. Document your own comparison pairs and assemble a six-image series.

Who it is for

Beginners who want to photograph everyday scenes, food, objects and consenting portrait subjects more deliberately.

What is included

8 lessons, 20 photo assignments, three real analysis photographs and your own six-image series.

How you learn

Written self-study course with PDF, fillable workbook and offline learning pages. No videos, live coaching or individual assessment.

A look inside the practice

Place a cup safely near a window. First photograph it with the window behind you, then from the side. The second image should show a different shadow pattern. If the sun moves behind a cloud, record that change: the comparison no longer isolates direction alone.

View a task and its review

Assignment 3: Make a pair using frontal and side window light. Assignment 4: Compare the same object in direct sun and open shade if both are safely available. Assignment 5: Hold a white card on the shadow side outside the frame and compare with an image without the card.

For 3, assess shape and shadow direction. For 4, inspect shadow edges and highlights rather than overall brightness alone. For 5, the card may reflect light into shadows; if the effect is not visible, adjust its distance or angle and record the result. There is no universally “best” type of light.

Your eight lessons

  1. Start deliberately and compare fairly
  2. Read the light before brightening the image
  3. Separate focus, movement and exposure
  4. Perspective, background and edges
  5. People, food and everyday objects
  6. Select and edit with restraint
  7. Tell a small story in pictures
  8. Review your work and plan the next practice

What you need

A smartphone camera, daylight, a safe everyday object, a clean soft lens cloth and some space. The standard camera and existing photo editor are enough. Names and features vary by device; not every camera has portrait mode, manual exposure or optical zoom.

Allow roughly 25–45 minutes per lesson plus personal practice. Read first, attempt the task before opening the answer, compare and record one correction. Timing is a guide and depends on your pace.

You receive a ZIP package with coursebook, fillable workbook, tools and local HTML learning pages. Extract the ZIP and open the learning pages in your browser without an additional account. PDF forms require a compatible PDF reader.
