Try a real course exercise
On day one, Email opens with 40 cases, receives 60 and completes 50 in 400 minutes. Phone opens with 10, receives 40 and completes 45 in 225 minutes. Calculate each closing balance and the combined average handling time.
Compare the worked answer
Email closes with 40 + 60 – 50 = 50. Phone closes with 10 + 40 – 45 = 5. Combined closing backlog is 55. Handling time is (400 + 225) / (50 + 45) = 6.58 minutes per completed case. Averaging 8 and 5 gives 6.50, which is not the combined case-weighted average.
